nom nom nom nomI ate this up.This was utterly fascinating I cannot believe that it took me this long to read it I only grabbed it because it was referenced several times in a trivia book that I was reading a while ago. This is a complete look at Tolkien the man You may feel that he was too chummy, ignored his wife or that he had terrible work habits Whatever He was a language expert, something that I ve always been interested in, and he used his interest in languages as a jumping off point to cre [...]
This book sets out to explain why an apparently ordinary man like J.R.R Tolkien could write such extraordinary books like The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion and comes up with the definite answer of Danged if I know That s not actually a quote but Mr Carter does wrap the book up by noting that if you actually want to get to know Tolkien then you should read his books instead of his biography Which makes me glad I got this from the library and didn t pay anything.Anyhow, it was [...]
Humphrey Carter manages to follow J.R.R Tolkien s 81 years with all its ups, downs, twists and turns Through Tolkien The Authorized Biography, we see intimately and as completely as possible the man behind Middle earth A combination of extensive research, numerous interviews and access to Tolkien s most personal writings provided Carter with the garden from which he harvested this behind the scenes portrayal of one of the greatest authors of all time. This book was, for me, inspirational, encoura [...]
As a devoted fan of J R R Tolkien and his writing, I very much enjoyed reading this book The author was able to capture all aspects of his life, unlike your usual biography It was interesting read about how Tolkien sought the inspiration to write his books and develop his languages What I love even about the book is the style that the book is set up in Anyone who has read The Lord of the Rings will recognize the same chapter setup, and the appendices in the back of the book, listing family info [...]
I highly recommend it for any fan of Tolkien I read it simultaneously with a re read of Lord of the Rings, which I would also highly recommend doing Carpenter gives great insight into Tolkien s creative process, as well as his friendship with C.S Lewis I took two big impressions away from this book The first was that Tolkien s writing and invention was not carried out with the goal of being published at least not initially It began as a private hobby alongside his studies at Oxford, and a story [...]
Ronald Tolkien was a unique individual Who would or even could create numerous languages from a place called Middle Earth And then write stories of the mythological people that used the languages His magnum opus, started in 1917, was not published till after his death His son Christopher finished Silmarillion He never expected to be famous but handled it well I was challenged by the love he had for his family He tired of life alone very quickly, surviving his wife by only a year Carter is fair a [...]
I never knew that a biography could move me as much as this one did The writing was personal and flowed very well There were times I could not put it down, even though I knew how it ended Everyone knows Tolkien is now dead and gone But after reading this I got a better feeling for him, his family, his works I see much of myself in Tolkien, which can be said of many others I m sure I would recommend this to anyone who cares anything about fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, or just likes to read in g [...]
Tolkien The book but apparently also the man himself is slow developing but interesting If you re a fan of Hobbits and looking for background information in light of the movie then I would encourage you to pick this book up if you can find it on the cheap If you re not pursuing an understanding of Tolkien s literary philosophy on character names or insights into the lifestyle of an author professor, I would encourage you to pass on this one.
I really liked this book It was written in a nice style, and was very thoughtful The reader did a good job of telling where Tolkien got his inspirations, but at the same time separating Middle Earth from the interesting story of the man himself I loved to hear about his life, because it was fascinating, particularly his devotion to language.
Starts a bit slow, but offers a fascinating look at Tolkien and particularly, the meticulous and incredible work involved with the creation and sub creation of Lord of the Rings.

Very education and allows for a good view into what Tolkien was like as a person.
